George Perry Miller
George Perry Miller, a beloved husband, dad, Poppi and friend, took his last trip around the bases on Tuesday, July 23, 2024, in Pinehurst, at the age of 79. Born in Mobile, Ala., he embarked on a life living by the Golden Rule and filled with adventure, service and unconditional love for his family.
The middle of five boys born to Cecil and Mary (Shaw) Miller, Perry’s family roots extended to Savannah, Ga., before settling in Winston-Salem, in 1959. A passionate baseball player, he pursued his athletic dreams at Wake Forest University and later Atlantic Christian College. His college years were marked by the beginning of a lifelong love story when he met Diane Francis Kimel, at Wake Forest. Their enduring bond led to marriage in August 1966.
Interrupting his baseball aspirations, Perry answered the call to duty by serving his country in the Air Force, which included a tour in Vietnam and finishing his four years of service as a staff sergeant at a SAC base in California. Upon his return to North Carolina, he spent most of his career in the textile industry, traveling the world and sharing his expertise.
A man of unwavering spirit, Perry's love for sports extended beyond his playing days. He found joy in coaching youth sports, including his own son and grandchildren, and was an active member of the community through organizations like AMBUCS and Special Olympics. His infectious enthusiasm and big-hearted nature endeared him to all who knew him.
Perry is survived by his devoted wife, Diane; their son, Chris (Helena); and cherished grandchildren, Will and Evie. He is also survived by two brothers, Gene (Clayton) and Kenneth (Niceville, Fla.).
A celebration of life will occur on Tuesday, Aug. 13, 4 p.m., at Community Presbyterian Church. A graveside service will be held at Forsyth Memorial Park in Winston-Salem, on Saturday, Aug. 17.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to FirstHealth Hospice and Palliative Care.
-I remember Perry as being a well liked, very nice person. His obituary bears out what a good life he had and his many accomplishments and attributes. Rest in peace, Perry, for a life well-lived. I invite anyone who can to add to Perry's "in memory' page. Danny Ferguson

Perry was a wonderful person who always was so positive, friendly and motivated. I knew Perry and Dianne throughout my school years and eventually we all attended wake Forest together. Through the years we lost contact, but after reading his obituary, I see that he and Dianne have had a beautiful life together... Congratulations to Perry on living a good, loving life and my sympathy and love goes out to Dianne and their family... Pam Bain Davis

What I remember most about Perry is that he was a great athlete and I really enjoyed playing football with him. He always had a great smile and that there wasn't much he couldn't do extremely well athletically. God Bless him and his family and may our Lord be with them always!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I remember Perry trying to show me what I was doing wrong in the batter's box. I already knew what I was doing wrong -- I was MISSING !!!!! Great guy; friend to all; great athlete; and one of those you were proud to have on your side. I was never the athlete that Perry was, but I will always value the fact that in those days, RJR gave everyone the oportunity to participate.
