My friend Burt was an extraordinary character and a very dear and devoted friend. He lived in Florida where he flew for several airlines, starting with a small regional one like Piedmont but in Florida. As they were gobbled by bigger fish Burt found himself in the choppy waters of corporate takeover politics, but he persevered and succeeded at each level. He had been married, had two kids, and then divorced. But he found true love the second time around and had a lovely young daughter. Life was good and he was sticking to the land and doing some teaching. Went out for a run, came home, sat down while his wife went into the house to get him a cool drink, and died right there in his back yard. After an active and multi-faceted life, Burt found a short and relatively easy way to go. That was several years ago already, but all of us who knew him miss him to this day.
