Bill and I were at East Carolina together and roomed in the same dorm for a while.  I sometimes caught a ride home with him in his old, beat up Volvo, which required two people to operate it  Bill would actually steer and operate the gas and brakes, while I changed gears by using a screw driver to push gears this way and that in the transmission case, which was open and accessbile between the bucket seats. Once, it broke down and we tried to get a tow, but the tow truck pulled the bumper off the Volvo.  We left it up near Durham on the side of the road and hitchhiked home.  We were quite a pair.

Growing up, Bill lived just past the Robin Hood Drive-In and his family had horses. I remember Bill cutting class at ECU for a week or two.  When he finally returned, he had to go see the dean of men to explain his absence.  He told Dean Mallory that a wildcat had attacked the family horse stable.  Dean Mallory replied that he had to believe him because nobody in their right mind would make up a story like that if it wern't t true. (and it really was true.)

According to the newspaper clipping, while on I-40 enroute to East Tennessee State University, Bill, then age 34, his wife, Anabel Wood Dancy, age 29 and their ten year old son, William Taylor Dancy, Jr. were killed when Anabel fell asleep at the wheel, resulting in  their van running off the road and striking a bridge abutment of an overpass. Their daughter, Susan Lee Dancy, age 8, survived the crash and was listed in serious condition in the intensive care unit of N.C.Baptist Hospital

Bill was always enthusistic about everything he did. He was a real character, a good honest person and a good friend. I'm sorry we lost him so young, but nevertheless, I'm glad I knew him.
