Steve, you were a big guy with a big heart. I'll always remember what a nice and generous fellow you were and particularly your kind words and sentiments in our last conversation. Here's hoping we meet again to catch up with one another in the beyond.
STEVE BLAKE WAS A FRIEND AND CLASSMATE YOU COULD ALWAYS COUNT ON TO HAVE YOUR BACK. HE WAS A BIG MAN WITH A BIGGER HEART. I REGRET THAT I NEVER TOLD HIM THAT I LOVED HIM AS A GREAT FRIEND AND BROTHER. GOD BLESS YOU STEVE AND AS OTHERS HAVE SAID, I LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING YOU IN OUR FATHER'S KINGDOM.
GOD BLESS YOU STEVE AND I THANK OUR LORD FOR HAVING YOU IN MY LIFE!
Stephen “Steve” Blake peacefully passed away in the comfort of his home on February 25th. There will be a time of visitation held at Salem Funerals & Cremations on Reynolda Rd. at 6:00 pm Thursday, March 3rd, followed by a time of remembrance at 7:00 pm.
It would be a surprise for most to learn Steve was born in Freeport, New York in 1944. Shortly thereafter his family moved to Winston-Salem where his love affair for the area began. He graduated class of ’62 from R.J. Reynolds High School and received his bachelor’s degree from Guilford College.
He then began his sales career, which was perfect for someone who never met a stranger. Steve’s ability to strike a conversation and easily connect with others was evident in all his endeavors.
This new chapter of sales and later management for the freight industry moved he and his young wife, Judy, away from the area. They settled in Shreveport, LA where they raised their daughters, Leslie and Nancy.
Steve always talked of finding his way back to his beloved hometown of Winston-Salem and finally made that dream come true in 1996. He enjoyed reconnecting with old friends, and family in the area, helping to organize high school reunions and gathering with other sports fanatics to play fantasy football. Known throughout the neighborhood for his ritual of cooking out and engaging with those passing by; Steve believed in the value of connecting with others, which is evident in the many relationships he held dear and the timelessness of each and every one of them.
He also enjoyed visiting his daughters at their homes and spending time with his five grandchildren. In recent years he enjoyed the companionship of his girlfriend, Bonnie Boles and was devoted to his buddy, Maxx the cat.
He is preceded in death by his parents Claude Wallace and Jane Blake and his wife, Judith Stith Blake. He is survived by his brother Daniel Blake (married to Elaine Blake), daughters Leslie Blake Ehemann and Nancy Blake Clark (married to Benjamin Clark) and grandchildren: Gabriel and Olivia Ehemann and Isabel, Abigail and Blake Clark.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Animal Adoption and Rescue Foundation (AARF), 311 Harvey Street, Winston-Salem, NC 27103 or https://www.aarfws.org/donate-intro.
II is hard to believe Steve Blake, who some of us called Steveareno, is gone. He was one of the most dedicated members of the RJR62 Reunion Committee and he loved Reynolds High School and his many, many friends. with all of his heart. For many years, probably 65 or more I knew Steve and we did things together and I knew I could always count on him. I miss him already and I pray that my good friend rests in peace, Danny Ferguson
