I have known Frank since we were in Mrs. Smith's Walker Avenue kindergarten together. Through high school we remained casual friends, but at  ECU, we really became close when Syd Cuningham, Frank and I roomed together in an apartment over John's Flower Shop.  Frank was very studious and a faithful member of Air Force ROTC.  I was not-so-studious and had already been in the Marines. Syd and I concentrated on parties, while Frank had more serious interests.  Frank managed to tolerate Syd and I, and although I'm sure we caused him some sleepless nights, we remained good friends. Frank was a person of very high principles.  He served a number of years in the Air Force, went to Viet Nam, and came out a captain. Frank was always active in youth sports, and was rewarded for his efforts at Shaw Air Force Base in Sumter, South Carolina when a baseball field was named after him. After the Air Force, he went into teaching and served as principal and headmaster at a number of schools in Virginia.  .

Recently, our classmate, Beth King Sowers, uncovered a copy of a program from a kindergarten event at Mrs. Smith's kindergarten where a number of us from the class of 62 attended.   Frank Freudig was listed on the program as the rythmn band leader.  So, apparently at the tender age five, he was already showing signs of leadership.  Later, he played in the RJR band and I think he played in the ECU band before becoming the top ranked commander of the Airforce ROTC cadet corp at ECU. After that, he became an Airforce officer.

Frank has a beautiful daughter who i have as a friend on facebook.

Frank was always held in high esteem by his colleagues, and apparently he made a lasting impression on those he came in contact with after high school.  He led a great life and the world is a better place because he lived.

He then served as headmaster of Tidewater Academy in Wakefield, Virginia from 1988 to 1998.  In 1998, he served as principal of Lakeview Elementry School, Colonial Heights, until he retired in 2006.  Frank loved his children and grandchildren nd was passionate about bettering the lives of all children by providing hem the best eduction possible.

I thought old friends of Frankie Fruedig may enjoy a recent FB message I received from Frank Fruedig’s beautiful daughter, Nicole Fruedig Rutledge, which included a Facebook photo of Frank’s grandson, Little Frankie.

“Hi Mr. Ferguson! As you know, yesterday was the anniversary of my Dad's passing. After reading your article about him, I had to chuckle out loud. Like you said, he was a leader and a man of high principles from early on... apparently as early as kindergarden:). I couldn't agree more with your final statement, "The world is a better place because he lived." Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your kind words. They will one day be read to my son, my Dad's grandson. On a side note, my son has been called Little Frankie by many...I'm sure "Hoss" is loving that
